#WeAreWilmington: Community Journalism

We know that Wilmington has a vibrant history and culture created by a legacy of incredible people. Our goal is to tell the story of Wilmington and highlight the pride, struggles, and resilience of our community.

The Wilmington Wire started seven years ago with the mission of strengthening our community by sharing news and information about what is going on here compared to the city of LA as a whole. We noticed that there was little existing coverage of what was happening in Wilmington in traditional media, and the coverage that did happen was mostly negative.

We are changing that by taking control of the Wilmington narrative. We are here to tell our own story.

More than a dozen people have contributed content to the Wilmington Wire, as writers, reporters, storytellers, and filmmakers. Each month we reach between 30,000 and 100,000 people with an all-volunteer staff. We help community groups, schools, nonprofits, and local government share information about events, resources, and so much more.

We are proud to announce the launch of a new Community Journalism Program called Wilmington Community Voices at the Wilmington Wire. We will select and train local residents to report on important stories on the ground, and turn their stories into world-class journalism on the Wilmington Wire platform. This news will be by the community, for the community, every step of the way.

To get a preview of the type of stories we will be producing through Wilmington Community Voices, follow our posts on Facebook or Instagram by searching for #WeAreWilmington (don’t forget to include the # sign!). We are looking for 1,000 people to donate $10. By donating $10 you will be investing in a new generation of Wilmington storytellers capturing the legacy and vibrancy of our town.

What your funds will Support

The Wilmington Community Voices program will train community members in Wilmington as Community Correspondents. Each Community Correspondent will receive training on interviewing, research, media and storytelling techniques. Working with an editor, they will develop content such as articles, video, photo blogs, and other formats. Your funds will pay for training, stipends and equipment for the correspondents. Help us make this program a reality so we can continue to be a voice for Wilmington.
